As a part of the sustainability approach, REEEP II is following up on a few technological solutions implemented in its earlier phase. Pilot plant of slaughterhouse waste -based biogas, Kathaldia, Tongi under Gazipur City Corporation (GCC) is one of the technologies. The slaughterhouse waste-based biogas plant was redesigned and renovated incorporating few parts, for example; biogas generation, biogas distribution and bio-slurry production systems in cooperation with Local Government Engineering Department (LGED), GCC and SREDA.
Tongi slaughterhouse waste-based biogas plant was designed so that it could provide biogas to the peri urban community, produce organic fertilizer and overall enable a healthy environment through proper waste management. The plant has the capacity to produce 36 cubic centimeter (cc) biogas from slaughtering 35-40 cows and has the capacity of distributing cooking gas to neighbouring 24 houses. Currently the plant is supplying 4-5 hours cooking gas to the 6 nearbyhouses from the waste of slaughtering 6-8 cows.
However, in order to achieve the three features of the plant continuous uninterrupted operation and periodic maintenance under an ownership is necessary. In order to discuss the mentioned issue with GCC, Ms. Salima Jahan, Member (Renewable Energy), SREDA, Joint Secretary, Government of Bangladesh and National Project Director (NPD), REEEP II had a meeting with the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of GCC in presence of the Additional secretary of Local Government Division Mr. Maran Kumar Chakraborti at the zonal office of GCC, Tongi in January, 2020. During that meeting the following three issues were discussed: (i) smooth operation, (ii) maintenance and (iii) handover of the pilot plant to GCC and both SREDA and GCC agreed to work in collaboration with SREDA to make the pilot plant a role model for other City Corporations, Municipalities as well. NPD also visited the pilot plant on the same day.
